Published

on

After a significant explosion at the Klaarwater main substation, large portions of Durban are now in the dark.

The explosion’s thud was audible in many Durban areas to the west, including Pinetown and Westville.
The north, south, west, and center of the city are all under darkness, and the eThekwini Municipality has acknowledged that it is aware of the blackouts and that officials are looking into them further.

The following suburbs are experiencing blackouts as a result of the explosion:

Clare Estate, Reservoir Hills, Pinetown, Hillary, Westville, Shallcross, Malvern, Cato Manor, Mayville, Asherville, Hillary, Umbilo, Glenwood, Clairwood, Jacobs, Bayhead, Bluff, Maydon Wharf, Durban CBD, Durban North, Effingham, Redhill, and Avoca Hills are just a few of the neighborhoods in which these neighborhoods are found.

Some people have videos of the explosion, which happened shortly after 8 o’clock, while others have CCTV recordings. You may watch the video here.
Msawakhe Mayisela, a spokeswoman for the EThekwini Municipality, stated that municipal specialists were looking into the matter and would keep the public updated on its progress.

The Klaarwater Major sub-station, an important Eskom supply point for the city, has had a trip out, which the eThekwini Municipality is aware of. This power loss is affecting a lot of the city’s surrounding communities, he said.

Locals in the surrounding coastal town reported what happened in frenetic WhatsApp groups as it was happening.

Looking west, I noticed what appeared to be a massive blue flash across the entire sky. One homeowner in a neighborhood association claimed that there was a widespread blackout.
