UCL: They Didn’t Let Us Do Anything – Unai Emery Speaks After Villarreal’s 2-0 Defeat Against Liverpool

Villarreal manager, Unai Emery has opened up on why his club side decided to play a defensive game against Liverpool in their Uefa Champions League match on Wednesday night.

Unai revealed that it could have been the worst result if they have not defended toughly.

The Spanish side was defeated 2-0 in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final tie at Anfield.

In the first half of the match, Villarreal frustrated the Red’s efforts to get a scoresheet as it ended in a stalemate.

However, Jurgen Klopp’s side won thanks to an own goal and a Sadio Mane score.

“It might have been a lot worse,” Emery said to Movistar Plus.

“We attempted to attack, pass, and construct, but they wouldn’t let us, so our only option was to defend defensively in order to make it to the second match.”

“We didn’t do enough to beg forgiveness for anything.”
