4 Decomposed Bodies Found As Police Arrest 77 Illegal Miners In Orkney, North West

In an effort to totally get rid of illegal mining in the country, SA police rescued and arrested no fewer than 77 illegal miners operating in Orkney, North West.

The arrest which was made between Thursday, 14 April and Monday, 18 April 2022 was carried out by a multi-disciplinary team comprising the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District Illicit Mining Team, Orkney Visible Policing, and Detectives as well as Mining Rescue Team.

The action was prompted by a request from illegal miners for assistance in getting out of the mine shaft because they were famished.

On Friday, April 15th, 2022, four decomposing bodies were hauled up by illegal miners during the operation at Shaft no. 5 in Orkney.

60 of the 77 illegal miners seized and medically tested hail from Lesotho, 13 from Mozambique, and four from Zimbabwe.

Meanwhile, the four bodies are undergoing official identification.
