A riot broke out at an Easter Cape jail, which unfortunately resulted in the death of one inmate and the serious wounding of numerous others.

According to reports, a department of correctional service (DCS) worker and another convict was critically hurt during the altercation on Tuesday at the Mthatha Correctional Centre in the Eastern Cape.

The incident occurred during a workout session, according to department spokeswoman Singabakho Nxumalo.

“DCS can confirm that five criminals attacked officials and four other convicts during an exercise session at the Mthatha Correctional Centre in the Eastern Cape area about lunchtime on Tuesday,” said Nxumalo.

“Unfortunately, during the brawl, one of the five assailants succumbed to his injuries and died. Due to the seriousness of the injuries sustained, one official and another inmate remain hospitalized.”

He stated that an internal probe had been begun and that police would look into the matter. The facility is still in high alert mode.

The judicial inspectorate for correctional services (JICS) has been notified, and an independent inquiry is anticipated to be conducted.

“The inquiry will provide further information about the motive and circumstances that may have led to the occurrence,” Nxumalo said.
