Born and raised in the United States of America, Pastor Ray Bentley was the founder of Maranatha Chapel, a nondenominational evangelical church based in Rancho Bernardo. He started the church with 30 persons in August 1984. It all began with a mid-week bible study at a Recreation centre.
The fellowship outgrew the facility after three months and began holding Sunday morning services at a nearby junior high school.
The new church continued to develop; by the end of 1986, over 1100 people were attending, needing three-morning sessions plus an evening service, while still meeting at the school.
Maranatha Chapel opened their first site on 4.5 acres in Rancho Penasquitos, San Diego’s north county suburb, on March 17th, 1990.
To accommodate development, the church hosted three Sunday morning services and added a Saturday night “Sunday morning” session. The crowd quickly swelled to almost 3000 people.
Maranatha started ground on our present site on 15 acres in Rancho Bernardo in the summer of 1996.
The new 3000 seat church, new Sunday School facilities, and a 3000 square foot bookshop and café were dedicated in the fall of 1997. Maranatha Christian Schools, grades K-12, is presently located on a lovely 17.5-acre campus on Maranatha Way off of Camino Del Sur, about two miles west of Maranatha Chapel.

He thinks that the Bible is alive and is designed to be experienced by believers both in church and in everyday life, as guided by the Holy Spirit. That belief is reflected in his teaching, as he leads listeners on a Scripture-filled trip and, in the end, assists them in entering the story of God’s Word.
Maranatha’s Radio Show broadcasts his daily teachings across the United States and beyond the world. Pastor Ray is the author of six novels, the most recent of which is “The Threshing Floor,” a compelling story set in the Holy Land of Israel that carries the message of God’s hope.
A school and a basketball team are affiliated with Bently’s church. Maranatha’s high school tuition was $8,022 in 2010.
