South African Traffic Management Corporation has made over 2,000 arrests for road traffic violations ever since the beginning of December.

With the roads getting busy, police say they’ll be keeping a close eye on motorists to ensure safety for all road users.

“Our main objective is to make sure that traffic flows, but we are identifying those who are driving under the influence of alcohol and recklessly,” said RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane.

“More than 2,000 people have already been arrested for various offences — 500 [were] arrested for drunk and driving.

“Our priority is that everybody can travel safely and get home safely.”

Motorists have been urged to excise great caution.

There’s been an increase in the number of vehicles passing through the toll gates, mainly on the N1 and N3.
