The report of his sudden demise was made known through a social media post shared by Guardian Perspective on Friday morning.

An exclusive statement released by the Guardian through their Twitter page reads:

The Cleveland Guardians are saddened to share Andrés Meléndez passed away suddenly this afternoon in Miami, FL.

He was 20 years old. Born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, Andrés began his professional career in 2018 in the Milwaukee Brewers organization, spending two seasons between the Brewers’ Dominican Summer and Arizona League teams before being acquired by the Guardians in November 2019.

He spent the 2021 campaign at Low-A Lynchburg, appearing in 73 games.

Andrés is remembered by his teammates and friends as a positive, respectful, and thoughtful young man with a beautiful smile who had a profound impact on others.

He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, loved ones, teammates and those that knew him.

The Guardians 20yr old prospect Andres Melendez was born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela.

He came over to Cleveland in a trade for INF Mark Mathias in 2019. He spent the entire 2021 season with (Low-A) Lynchburg.
