Last week while receiving treatment in the hospital,  Mr Mangala spoke to a fellow True Patriot comrade yesterday saying that the reports of his death have been greatly exaggerated.

His health condition was reported to have been stabilized according to reports gathered from his doctor last week but is quite unfortunate that he passed away today.

Mangala Samaraweera was a Sri Lankan politician. He was the Minister of Finance from 2017 to 2019, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, for two terms from 2005 to 2007 and 2015 to 2017.

He created a stir in Sri Lankan politics when he was sacked as a minister by President Mahinda Rajapakse in 2007, after which he formed a new political party called the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (Mahajana) Wing, which later merged with the United National Party in 2010.

He served as a politician for over 30 years in his career until his retirement from politics in 2020.

During his tenure as a politician, he was known for his political stance against Sinhala Buddhism regime despite himself being a Sinhala Buddhist and despite Sri Lanka being a majority Buddhist nation
