Heavy riot exhumes and all roads blocked in Hibberdene after Hundreds of violent service delivery protestors blocked the N2 and R102 in Hibberdene on Tuesday Morning.
KwaZulu-Natal SAPS spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said that about 1000 people had blocked the road in the early hours of Tuesday morning. She said protestors had blocked the roads with burning tyres, rocks and logs and were complaining about water shortages in the area.
A video of the protest action has been circulating on social media. Watch the video here:

“Approximately 1000 people blocked the N2 and R102 using burning tyres and logs to voice their anger against Ugu Municipality,”Mbele said.
“The community complains about the shortage of water supply in Umtwalume within Umzumbe Municipality area. The police are monitoring the situation. No damages nor injuries have been reported so far,”Mbele said.
Tuesday’s protest action is not the first time that angry residents have expressed their frustration with the local municipality regarding their water supply and other service delivery complaints. Protestors who blocked the N2 freeway and South Coast roads several weeks ago demanded service delivery, including the provision of housing and economic development of the region.
During one violent South Coast protest in March a mob of angry protestors allegedly set several trucks alight on the N2 freeway as commuters headed home for the day.
On the same day police had earlier arrested three suspects for arson and public violence following the service violent protests that broke out in the early hours of the morning.
According to reports and videos posted on social media from the scene at the time protestors had also earlier set a municipal buildings and a state owned vehicle alight. They blocked the N2 at Izingolweni between Hibberdene and Port Shepstone with burning tyres and rubble from around 4.30am in the morning. A heavy police presence is now monitoring the area.
