A press statement released by Secretary to the Cabinet and Principal Private Secretary to the President, Dr. Simon Miti.
“It is with deep regret and sorrow that His Excellency Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, President of the Republic of Zambia announces to the nation the untimely passing of Hon. Mrs Justice Irene Chirwa Mambilima, Chief Justice of Zambia today 20th June, 2021, at approximately 17:00Hrs, in a private hospital in Cairo, Egypt. The late Chief Justice had travelled to Cairo on 10th June, 2021, on official business and fell ill whilst on duty in that country.” Dr Miti said.
Justice Mambilima was born and raised in Matero, a township in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia.
Mambilima’s upbringing among the poorest of the country in Matero is what ignited her desire for justice, leading her to a career in the legal profession.
She went to Chingwele Primary School in Matero and then from 1967 to 1971 she attended Matero Girls High School for her Secondary School education.
In 1972, she enrolled for a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree at the University of Zambia, where she graduated with merit in 1976. Thereafter, she obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree with merit from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London in 1977.
In this position, she presided over Zambia’s 2006, 2011 presidential and parliamentary elections, and the January 2015 presidential by-election.
She has been part of several election observer missions including in Liberia, Kenya, Mozambique and Seychelles.
Other past international assignments have included serving as Sessional Judge of the Supreme Court of The Gambia.
Mambilima sat on the International Board of the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) as a Director of the Africa Region.
She was also a member of a number of professional associations including the Zambia Association of Women Judges, the Editorial Board Council of Law Reporting, the Child Fund (Zambia), Women in Law Southern Africa, and the Council of the Institution of Advanced Legal Education.
Mambilima’s appointment as Chief Justice was unanimously ratified by the Zambian Parliament in February 2015, making her the country’s first female Chief Justice
