Who Is Hussam Abu Harbeed?

Hussam Abu Harbeed was a top commander for the northern front in Gaza. He was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Monday, a source in the group told Reuters.

He took the position in late 2019 after his predecessor, Bahaa Abu el-Atta, was also assassinated by Israeli military.

He has been a commander with Islamic Jihad for 15 years.

In a statement confirming it had killed Harbeed, the Israeli military said he “was behind several anti-tank missile terror attacks against Israeli civilians.”

Palestinians also said the IDF attacked a car in the western part of Gaza City and at least three people were killed in the incident. The military said the three tried to launch an attack from sea using an unmanned underwater vehicle.

The terror group responded by firing a barrage of rockets into Be’er Sheva, Ashkelon, Kiryat Malakhi and Ashdod, where a residential home sustained a direct hit. Three people were lightly wounded in the attack.

Earlier, Hamas fired rocket barrages at southern Israeli cities overnight and early morning while Israel struck a host of terror targets, including an unusually long underground attack tunnel, as fighting spilt into a second week on Monday.

Despite mounting international calls for a ceasefire, there was no sign of any imminent end to the most serious hostilities in years between Israel and the terror group that rules the densely-populated enclave, where 2 million Palestinians live.

In the morning hours, rocket salvos hit the southern cities of Be’er Sheva Ashkelon, Ofakim and Israeli communities bordering Gaza.

There have been no reports of damage or injuries so far.
Throughout the night, rocket alert sirens also blared in Be’er Sheva, Ashkelon Ofakim, Netivot and Israeli communities near the border.

The Iron Dome intercepted the majority of the projectiles, with the rest falling in open areas. There were no immediate reports of casualties from the attacks.
The military said that since 7pm on Sunday, 60 rockets have been fired from Gaza into Israel and at least 10 rockets fell inside the Gaza Strip.

The killing of  Hussam Abu Harbeed, Islamic Jihad’s northern division commander, was likely to draw a fierce response from the militant group as Israel’s fighting also rages on with the enclave’s Islamist rulers Hamas.

In a statement confirming it had killed Harbeed, the Israeli military said he “was behind several anti-tank missile terror attacks against Israeli civilians.”

The military said those attacks included one on the first day of the current round of fighting that it said had injured a civilian in Israel.
