British Choreographer, Liam Scarlett Dies At 34

Information that has flooded social media has it that popular British choreographer, Liam Scarlett has passed away at the age of 34. The former artist in residence with The Royal Ballet and ex-artistic associate with Queensland Ballet was reported to have taken his own life.

Liam Scarlett has choreographed lots of recent works for Miami City Ballet, Norwegian National Ballet, the BalletBoyz, English National Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Royal New Zealand Ballet.

At the age of 4, Scarlett’s started making impressive moves in dancing. Born in Ipswich, his first main stage work at Covent Garden was Asphodel Meadows in 2010.

In November 2012, aged 26, Scarlett gave up his dancing career as the first artist with The Royal Ballet, to become their first artist in residence, a post created especially for him by the Ballet’s director, Kevin O’Hare.

In January 2020, The 34-year-old Royal Ballet’s top choreographer was suspended over allegations of sexual misconduct involving students.

Scarlett enjoyed a rapid rise to dance stardom, winning the Ursula Moreton and Kenneth MacMillan awards for choreography whilst at the Royal Ballet School before joining the prestigious Royal Ballet company in 2005. He was promoted to the role of the first artist three years later, before retiring as a dancer in 2012 to focus on choreography.
