A terrible road accident along R61 road in Ngcobo on Sunday has claimed the lives of 5 persons.
The tragic accident involved a double police bakkie and a tipper truck, the victims four police officers, and a civilian all lost their lives.
According to an eyewitness, the truck and its passengers were seriously wounded while from the bakkie there was no one who survived the crash.
The accident happened when the truck driver with two occupants was driving along Engocbo had a collision with a Nissan double cab with 5 occupants heading towards Mthatha.
According to the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, the accident will be the 3rd head-on collision in the week in the area.
Speaking about the clash the Eastern Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga, said she was shocked at the tragic accident which claimed the lives of four SAPS members and a civilian.
She said the four officers were returning from the Chris Hani District where they conducted crime prevention operations and awareness campaigns with communities and schools.

The cause of the accident is being investigated.
