English songwriter, John Barry Mason has sadly passed away at the age of 85.
Popularly known for his 5 Ivor Novello Awards and co-wrote Love Grows Where my Rosemary Goes, Delilah, the Last Waltz and many more.
Barry’s death came to our notice after Gary Kemp disclosed it on Twitter on Saturday Morning. The cause of his death has not yet been disclosed.

Born in Juky 12 1935, Barry grew up the village of Coppull, near Chorley in Lancashire. A leading songwriter of the 1960s,
Barry wrote the bulk of his most successful songs in partnership with Les Reed. Mason gained many gold and platinum awards for his work including five Ivor Novello Awards, the most recent of them in 1998.
He owns much credits to most popular litral works which included “Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)”, “The Last Waltz”, “Here It Comes Again”, “I Pretend”, “There Goes My First Love”, “A Man Without Love”, “Winter World of Love” “Now That You are Gone”, “Rowbottom Square” and “Delilah”.
His songs have been recorded by Tom Jones, Dalida, P. J. Proby, David Essex, The Drifters, Rod Stewart, Petula Clark, Perry Como, Elvis Presley, Engelbert Humperdinck, The Fortunes, Charles Aznavour, Tony Christie, Connie Francis, Mireille Mathieu, Barbra Streisand, The Dave Clark Five, Cliff Portwood and Ashley Maclaine.
Confirming the news also was Musicals lyricist Sir Tim Rice wrote: “Very sad music business news. The wonderful lyricist Barry Mason who wrote so many hit songs, many with Les Reed, has died. He was a delightful modest fellow and will be greatly missed by his many songwriting and musical friends. RIP Barry.”
Musician and actor Gary Kemp, who was in Spandau Ballet, wrote: “Shocked to hear that my friend and lovely human Barry Mason died yesterday. A great songwriter who won 5 Ivor Novello Awards and co-wrote Love Grows Where my Rosemary Goes, Delilah, the Last Waltz and many more. All my love to his wife Vanessa and his children.”
Mike Batt described him as: “A wonderful, talented, sincere friend and ebullient, warm-hearted life-force.”
In a 2014 interview with the Wigan Observer Barry described his life in the pop music industry based on Denmark Street in Soho, working on track after track with musicians and collaborators and then touring the songs around producers’ offices in the hope they would be picked up.
He selected Delilah, The Last Waltz and Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes) as his three career highlights from his enormous discography.
He was awarded the MBE for his services to music in 2020.
