South Africana woke up this morning with the shocking news of Grant Shakoane demise. The Former Metro FM DJ was reported to have died on Thursday though circumstances surrounding his death has not been made known to the public.
Grant Shakoane in 1986 introduced Soul and RnB to Sunday Radio and was known for coming up with original phrases like “Shibabadu shibabu”. He was passionately obsessed with radio.
His show the GS Connection on Metro FM launched Catchphrases like “If it’s good it’s Grant” and For the time of your life and life of your time”.
Grant began his radio career as a translator at an advertising agency. According to grant in an interview, what they did then was to record an advert and take them to the SABC to broadcast it in different languages. He got into Metro FM as a DJ through an audition.
Grant was born and raised in Mamelodi. He schooled at Mamelodi high school.
At his early stage as a teen, Grant Shakoane joined a little music group called “Midnight Kids”, a five group team.
Radio personality and close friend Tim Modise had last week requested prayers for Shakoane who he said was “in a serious condition” at a Johannesburg hospital for an unknown condition.
“Our friend & big brother, the radio ‘gentle giant’ Grant Shakoane is in a serious condition at one of the hospitals in Joburg. His wife informs me that he’s been in this battle for a while. Join me in praying for his recovery. We love you,” Modise wrote at the time.
Tim Modise today broke the news of Shakoane death.
I’ve just learned from Wilson Nkosi that ‘the Gentle Giant’ Grant Shakoane has passed on. Like many of us and his friends, I’m saddened by the news. I extend my sympathies to Ausi Albertina & family. I wish you strength. Modimo a le fodise #RIPGrantShakoane; he tweeted.
