Former third baseman in Major League Baseball  Is Dead

A former third baseman in Major League Baseball, Ken Reitz has passed away at the age of 69. The right-handed hitter, Reitz played for the St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco Giants was reported to have died yesterday March 31 2021.

Ken Reitz retired with the highest all-time career fielding percentage for National League third basemen at .970 after leading the National League in fielding percentage a record 6 times.

Announcing Ken’s death to the public, Mark Gram wrote – It is with great sorrow that I pass along the news of the passing of Cardinal great and friend of this site, Ken Reitz.

Kenny died yesterday but at the request of his son, Brett, I said nothing about it until today so they could get in touch with family members. The St. Louis Cardinals will have a press release later today.

While Kenny was an All-Star and a Gold Glove winner at 3rd base I believe he’d rather be remembered as a player who was a fan favourite. He could never get over how the fans always were so kind to him. Always wanting to shake his hand or wanting an autograph…and Ken would NEVER turn anyone down.

I was lucky enough to call Kenny a friend over the last few years. He’d call me at 8:00 am or 8:00 pm just to ask how things were going….which would lead to stories about his playing days which meant I wouldn’t say a word because I didn’t want to miss a thing Ken would say. Now we’ll miss more than his words.
