Boxer Turned Evangelist, Jimmy Abbott Is Dead

Former heavyweight boxing champion turned Evangelist, Jimmy Abbott has passed away at the age of 61.

According to reports, The Puncher turned pastor, Jimmy Abbott died in Heidelberg last night due to heart failure.

The Heidelberg Volunteer Medics took to their official Facebook page to announce that the legendary boxer has passed on.

Volunteers received a call for an elderly male patient with difficulty breathing and severe heart failure. Volunteers responded immediately an assisted on the scene. At 20h40 Jimmy Abbott sadly passed away. It is with a heavy heart that we bid farewell to this great legend. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends; they posted on Facebook.

The ex-SA heavyweight champion was a hellacious puncher who enlivened the SA boxing scene in the 70s and 80s before settling down as an evangelist.

Jimmy, who at one stage weighed 375kg had suffered a life-threatening stroke in 2013 that also took his life then.

At one time in the ’80s, Jimmy became South Africa’s youngest heavyweight boxing champion, with Springbok colours, and ranked No 9 in the world at his peak.

Abbott became a champion in March 1980 after knocking out Knoetze at the Ellis Park tennis stadium

During his boxing career, Abbott injected steroids for five years and his appetite increased and he literally ate himself out of the boxing ring‚ weighing 370kg.

Three heart attacks and a stroke later helped him to reduce his weight to 170kg.
