Information reaching our news desk has it that ABSA Group’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Peter Matlare has passed away. He was reported to have died today from COVID-19 related complications.

He was the deputy CEO at ABSA. Peter was also a former CEO of Tiger Brands, the SABC and of Primedia Broadcasting.

He held many executive roles over the years including at Primedia Broadcasting, Tiger Brands and most recently at ABSA.

Born on 3oth November 1960 in Durban South Africa, Peter Bambatha Matlare is ABSA Group’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer.

He previously occupied the position of Chief Executive Officer & Executive Director at Johannesburg-listed Tiger Brands Limited., Chief Executive Officer of South African Broadcasting Corp., Executive Director-Commercial at Vodacom SA, Chief Strategy & Business Development Officer at Vodacom Group Ltd. and Chairman of National Association of Broadcasters.

He bagged his Master of Arts Degree from the University of York, Canada and his Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of Plymouth.

Peter Matlare joined the ABSA board as an independent non-executive director in 2011. In August 2016, he was appointed deputy chief executive officer responsible for regional operations and he remains on the board as an executive director.

He began his career with the Urban Foundation and Citibank and gained international experience, particularly in Europe.
