The President Cyril Ramaphosa while addressing the nation at 8 pm on Monday on developments in relation to the country’s response to the coronavirus pandemic said “Funerals have become a death trap for many of our people.

South Africa records 23,000 deaths and 8,300 new Covid-19 infections in the last 24hrs – Health Minister Dr Mkhize

According to reports, most measures will remain in place. Most indoor and outdoor gatherings will not be permitted.

Speaking on Monday evening President Cyril Ramaphosa said “Funerals have become a death trap for many of our people.

“I’m encouraged by how people have responded to the call to wear masks whenever in public.”

“If we act with urgency…we will be able to save more lives…rebuild our economy.”

“The pandemic in our country is now at it’s most devastating.”

The President said “The sale of alcohol and on-site consumption of alcohol are still now permitted.”

“If we are to realise our aspirations for this year, we must do a number of things…we must unite.”

“There are currently over 15-thousand people in hospital with COVID-19….a third are on oxygen.”

 

He said “Hours of curfew will start at 9pm and end at 5am.”

“Funerals may not be attended by more than 50 people and there need to be social distancing.

“Despite the severity of the pandemic in our country, we must never see ourselves as being totally helpless.”

“We must do everything possible to slow the rate of transmission. We will undertake to defeat this virus, a massive programme of vaccination.”

“Now more than ever we must each make a deliberate decision to avoid any unnecessary contact of other people.”

“We do know this new variant tends to spread must faster.”

“As we begin the new year, let us set out a clear path of working together and recovery.”

“Land ports of entry will be closed until the 15th of Feb for general entry.” There are exceptions to this rule.

South Africa will receive one million #COVID19 #vaccine doses in January & 500 000 doses in Feb from the Serum Institute of India.

“We have put in place a comprehensive vaccine strategy to reach all parts of the country.”

“Given the demand for vaccines, we are exploring all avenues to get as many vaccine doses for South Africans.”

“We are in the process of procuring vaccines through three channels.”

The President Cyril Ramaphosa says there is concern about whether schools should re-open. He says the national coronavirus command council will meet to discuss the way forward.

“We have secured 20 million doses for the course of the year.”

He said his Cabinet has decided to maintain adjusted level 3 lockdown measures. Most measures will remain in place. Most indoor and outdoor gatherings will not be permitted.

“There are some in the country who are skeptical about the vaccine…there’s much conspiracy theories about the vaccines.”

The presient says everyone wants to know when the vaccine will arrive in SA. He says government is doing everything possible to ensure the process is handled effectively and efficiently.
