South Africa records 23,000 deaths and 8,300 new Covid-19 infections in the last 24hrs – Health Minister Dr Mkhize

In the last 24 hours, on December 12, 2020, South Africa recorded more than 200 deaths due to Covid-19, bringing the number of national casualties to 23,000.

More than 8,300 new Covid-19 infections were reported during the same period.

Speaking on his social media page, Health Minister Dr Mkhize said the country was now in the second wave of viral infections, with four states being the main drivers of the new wave. These are EC, WC, KZN & Gauteng, he added, adding that 8,319 new infections appeared during the 44,194 tests, with a positive score of 18.9%.

Of the last 205 deaths associated with Covid-19, 96 were in Eastern Cape. There were also 42 in the Western Cape, 20 in Gauteng and Kwazulu-Natal, 15 in the Northern Cape, 10 in the Free State, and 2 in Limpopo.

This means that there are currently 22,952 confirmed deaths from the virus in South Africa.
