Popular actress, Lucinda Shaw is known for Rubber Gloves (2001) and Gypsy: Live from the Savoy Theatre (2015) has passed away. Lucinda was reported to have died over the weekend. circumstances surrounding her death is not known yet as at the time of filing this report.
The Australian born actress’ first leading role was The Lady of the Lake in the Melbourne production of Spamalot. In the UK, she performed in productions of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, From Here To Eternity, The Bodyguard and Gypsy, to name but a few. She also appeared in the film version of London Road, directed by Rufus Norris.
Shortly after her training at Brent Street Studios in Sydney, Shaw began her career in musical theatre. Her first principal role was playing The Lady of the Lake in Monty Python’s Spamalot in Melbourne
Johanna Allen wrote – I didn’t know Lucinda Shaw very well. We met in callbacks for Lady of the lake. I was a little bit in awe of her – she bounced in, sass and vavoom from head to toe. But we laughed, compared notes about ‘tucking our cleavage’ back in our dresses (one of those kind of roles) and nervously smiled at each other, with that sense of sisterhood our industry builds.
I am staggered she’s gone – only because I remember her as such a force. I’m so glad you got to be Lady of the Lake Lucy. The time you were allocated, seems horribly cruel today. I’m thinking of you, and celebrating you, and sending all my love to those who loved you. Live big my friends. Life is precious.
Rina Gill wrote – I first saw Lucinda onstage in our show Priscilla in 2011. She flew high as a diva and I couldn’t take my eyes off her. Most recently, I had the great good fortune to see her incredible talent on full raunchy display in Cy Coleman’s The Life directed by Michael Blakemore at the Southwark theatre in 2017. While I knew and loved her work as a performer, I only got to know Lucinda personally over the last few years during her fight with cancer – a fight that never robbed her of her luminosity or thousand-watt smile. When I had Covid earlier this year, Lucinda texted with love and concern at a time she would have been well into the final rounds of her fight. We exchanged news about our health and she emphatically assured me that despite the creeping bad news, “It’s not all doom and gloom though. My fiancé and I are getting married on September 18th which we a both VERY excited about… we are so looking forward to being married!!!! X”.
I last saw Lucinda last year in September after asking her to perform in a Priscilla corporate gig at the London Hilton for Tourism Australia. Gone was her long cherry mane and in its place had grown a beautiful and unapologetic silver pixie cut. The authenticity suited her and somehow made her beautiful face shine even more brightly. Despite her powerful stage presence, it was clear that her body was weak from the chemotherapy. As the first familiar chords of I Will Survive began to play, Garry and I tensed with emotion. Lucinda held the audience in the palm of her hand that night as she sang her heart out.
