Traffic road accident in Western Guatemala has killed 10 people

At least 10 people died in a traffic accident in western Guatemala when the vehicle they were travelling in fell into a ravine, several sources confirmed Tuesday.

The road accident was reported on Monday night in the department of San Marcos, specifically in the municipality of Tajumulco, 270 kilometres west of Guatemala City and very close to the border with Mexico, as confirmed by the municipal mayor of the town, Eliseo Chávez, in statements to local media.

According to preliminary reports, the people were transported in a “pick-up” type vehicle that fell into a ravine more than 100 meters deep. The reasons why the driver of the vehicle lost control have not been disclosed.

Mayor Chávez also indicated that they have requested the support of the Guatemalan Army to help in the search for wounded and fatal victims of the accident, several of them minors.

The names of the deceased have not been released by the authorities, which do not rule out that the number of fatalities from the accident may be higher in the coming

On October 25, seven people died in another traffic accident also in the west of the territory, specifically on a highway that connects the departments of Retalhuleu and Quetzaltenango, bordering San Marcos.

Three days earlier, on October 22, three soldiers of the Guatemalan Army died in another road accident, this time in the east of the territory.
