Tributes Floods Social Media

Assistant Editor at Socialist Register wrote – Tonight my mentor, comrade, and dear friend Leo Panitch died. Five weeks ago, he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, and while receiving treatment in the hospital contracted Covid-19. This caused viral pneumonia, making it almost impossible for him to breathe. These past few days have been difficult beyond words. It is impossible for me to fathom his absence. Without Leo I would not be who I am today, and I can’t help but feel that a part of me has died with him tonight. His passing has left a hole in my life that will be impossible to ever fill. There will be more to say later, but for now, there is just sadness, anger, and hurt.

Max Shanly wrote – Heartbroken to hear that my dear friend, comrade, and mentor Leo Panitch has passed away. I don’t know what else to say right now beyond what I said to him just weeks ago via email. “They say in life you only have a handful of real friends who really matter, I hope you know you are one of those to me. You have stood by me through thick and thin, madness and sanity, good times and bad; something many others have not. You have not only been my friend and comrade but my mentor and confidante. I do not think I would have achieved half of the little I have without you and your work to inspire me. I only wish we had gotten to know each other sooner.” Sleep well, my friend. Love you always.

David Bush wrote – Saddened to hear of the passing Leo Panitch. I was fortunate to take a course with Leo and Sam about state theory at York University. He always treated me with kindness and respect. He has left an important legacy and many important works for the socialist left in Canada and internationally. My heart goes out to his family, friends and his many comrades. His loss will be felt by many.

Ursula Huws wrote – Woke to the unutterably sad news that Leo Panitch has died. what a giant of a man – warm, intellectually and personally generous, with bottomless resources of kindness and political optimism. A true socialist whose mission was to build bridges, with no trace of sectarianism. I have no words for what this huge loss will mean for me and I’m sure for countless others. Without his support and encouragement, I would not be who I am now. He is irreplaceable. Devastated.
