Sportscaster Stera Ngezana Has Passed Away



Umhlobo Wenene FM Sports analyser Sithembiso ‘Stera’ Ngqezana has sadly passed on. The news was confirmed by Phumzile Mnci. The cause of his death is not yet known as at the time of filing this report.

Stera Ngezana used to host sports shows at 7-8 pm and weekends shows at 3-6 pm.

Stera Ngezana in an interview said radio was part of his life. “when I’m on air I forget everything that is negative in my heart I also learnt that you will never reach the ceiling on the radio” he said.

Stera Ngezana was raised and brought by her grandmother. He is a qualified cricket and athletics coach. Ngqezana – who wished for people to remember him for his humbleness and love for sport development – won the Boxing SA’s 2011 media personality of the year award in Durban.

In 2014 Stera Ngezana won the Eastern Cape Premier Sport and Recreation Achievers Award in the sports presenter category. In 2013, he was selected by the National Sports and Recreation Department as one of the 100 most influential people in sports.

Ngqezana was born in Port Elizabeth, but spent a few years living in Grahamstown and Peddie. When he returned to the city, he matriculated at Cowan High School in New Brighton. He went on to study for a diploma in teaching at the Algoa College of Education.

Reacting to Stera’s death Umhlobo Wenene news presenter Mafa Bavuma wrote on his Facebook page – 2020 undidilizile nkalo zonke kulo nyaka. I have lost another Big Brother and Mentor. Thank you Bro Sterra Ngqezana for your guidance, I will miss our long conversations over the fone okanye xa sidibene. RIP ‘Nja Ye Game” it was a great honour for me to have known and work nawe Ncibane. I promise to keep ingcebiso zakho about life and work. Your Spirit will live on Ncibane.

Former CEO of Boxing SA Tsholoelo Lejaka has described the death of Sithembiso “Sterra” Ngqezana as the loss of a ‘loyal ambassador on mainstream radio’ for the sport. The amiably gentle giant who was an ace sports presenter for Umhlobo Wenene died on Saturday morning of natural causes.
