Deputy Commissioner of the National Police, Lt-Gen Bonang Mgwenya has been fired.

National SA Police Service Commissioner, Khehla Sitole, has fired Deputy National Commissioner Bonang Mgwenya. She was arrested recently on charges of fraud, corruption and money laundering.

Police on Friday confirmed that Mgvenyan, who is being prosecuted for fraud in the Palm Ridge Magistrates’ Court, had fired National Commissioner General Khela Sitole.

Mgvenyan showed up in court last month after being arrested by the Investigative Division on charges of corruption, fraud, theft and money laundering.

The allegations relate to her alleged involvement in the appointment of a hand-picked service provider to install emergency lights for 1,500 police vehicles in Gauteng.

Mgwenya was suspended after her arrest.

Police spokesman Brig Vish Naidoo said Mgwenya had been found guilty by an internal disciplinary tribunal and had been “fired on Thursday”.

“The national police commissioner remains resolute in his efforts to clean the SA Police Service of any form of wrongdoing by members of all ranks,” Naidoo said.
