The island thanked Washington for its support, as this “sale helps improve its strong defense capabilities” against China, which it considers part of its territory.
The Washington government on Wednesday announced its approval of the possible sale of three missile systems worth more than $ 1 billion to Taiwan, which, according to the US State Department, “serves the national interests, economic and security of the United States.”
The Taipei Economic and Cultural Representation (TECRO) in the United States has requested the purchase of 135 AGM-84H missiles and four ATM-84H long-range missiles. “Twelve CATM-84H attractive air training missiles,” said a statement from the United States Defense and Security Cooperation Agency.
“This sale serves the national, economic and security interests of the United States, supporting the recipient’s ongoing efforts to modernize its military and maintain its reliable defense capabilities,” the statement said.
“The proposed sale will help improve recipient security, maintain political stability, military-economic balance and progress in the region,” the statement said, adding that with this arsenal, Taiwan would be able to “increase its effectiveness in war” or “counteract or prevent aggression.”
While waiting for it to be approved by the US Congress, the Taiwanese authorities thanked Washington for its support, as this “sale helps improve the island’s strong defense capabilities”, which China considers part of its territory despite having an independent government since 1949.
“The sale helps to enhance Taiwan’s strong national defense capabilities, thus overcoming military expansion from the Strait,” the president’s office said in a statement, referring to the 180-kilometer-wide border that separates mainland China.
In recent days, a US naval vessel has crossed the Taiwan Strait.
The Arleigh Burke-class missile fighter, the USS Barry, “was currently navigating the Taiwan Straits (October 14 (local time) under international law),” said Seventh Fleet spokesman Raine Momsen. , it is an announcement.
“The transit of the ship through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the United States’ commitment to the open Indo-Pacific Ocean,” he added.
The US Navy regularly conducts so-called “freedom of navigation” operations in the Taiwan Strait, which separates China from the island.
Actions always give strong responses from Beijing. China considers Taiwan part of its territory.
The island is ruled by a rival government that took refuge there in 1949 after the Communists seized power in China.
Taiwan has its own flag և currency, but the UN does not recognize it as an independent country. In 1979, Washington severed diplomatic ties with Taipei to improve ties with China, but the United States remains its most powerful ally, its main arms supplier.
