A man has been shot dead after attacking police in Avignon, France.

Although nothing has been revealed of what led to the shooting the police are still carrying out the investigation.

Meanwhile, a  knife-wielding man has beheaded a woman and killed two other people in a suspected terrorist attack in a church in the French city of Nice on Thursday, police and officials said.

Eyewitnesses said the attacker shouted “Allahu Akbar” before he beheaded the woman.

One of those killed inside the church is believed to be the church leader, he told Estros, adding that a woman tried to escape from inside the church and ran to the bar in front of the building.

The mayor of Nice, Christian Estroz, who described the attack as a terrorist attack, said on Twitter that it took place in the church of Notre Dame or nearby.

Estrosi says the assailant repeatedly shouted “Allahu Akbar,” or “God is the greatest,” even after he was arrested by police.

One of those killed inside the church is believed to be the church leader, he told Estros, adding that a woman tried to escape from inside the church and ran to the bar in front of the building.

“The suspect who was attacked with a knife was shot by the police while being detained. He is on his way to the hospital, he is alive,” Estros told reporters.

“That’s enough,” said Estros. “Now is the time for France to justify itself to the laws of peace so that Islam Fascism can be finally eliminated from our territory.”

Reuters reporters at the scene reported that police armed with automatic weapons placed a security code around the church, which is located on Nice Med en Medetsin Avenue in the main shopping street of the city. Ambulances and fire trucks were at the scene.
