A 27-year-old man, Walter Wallace Jr armed with a knife has been identified as the man who was shot and killed in West Philadelphia by two police officers.

Walter was shot multiple times by the officers in front of his mother as she begged them not to shoot.

According to Philly Inquirer Article “Witnesses at the scene say the man was armed with a knife but was not charging the police. A video from a bystander showed the man was at least 10 feet away from the officers when they began shooting. He was walking toward the officers and they were backing away from him when they fired.”

The incident happened at Locust and South 61st streets around 4 p.m Monday.

According to a statement released by the police about the shooting, officers received a call for a report of a man with a weapon when police arrived they asked the man to drop the knife several times before opening fire.

The man was taken to the hospital by police where he died.

Mayor Jim Kenney identified the man as Walter Wallace. Investigation about the shooting is still ongoing.

Approximately 75-100 people have gathered in Malcolm X Park in West Philly for a vigil for Walter Wallace, a black man who was murdered by police this afternoon.

Community members are taking turns speaking impromptu about their anger, with recurring chants of “F*ck the Police” and “Abolish the Police”.

Protesters are taking the street heading north on 52 at Addison.
