Dan Dettman has been identified as the man killed when a fallen tree rolled onto him outside his Minnetonka home. Dan Dettman was a longtime local television sport and news photographer who worked for KSTP-TV.

According to the police, Dan Dettman’s body was discovered about 3:50 p.m. Monday at a home in the 11200 block of Timberline Road. He had been working to remove the tree, which had been recently uprooted by a storm but in the process of the rolled and pinned him down for hours.

The police said he was trapped for about two hours before he was discovered.

His Bill Poore said a lot more about Dan Dettman

As posted on his official Facebook page

Now that his family has put it out there, I want to tell you all about Dan Dettman. Dan was an Air Force vet who retired from KSTP several years ago where he worked as a news photog.

He has also been a fixture in our sports television family here for well over 30 years. If you have watched Vikings football, Twins baseball, Timberwolves basketball, and North Stars, Wild, and Gopher hockey on TV you are guaranteed to have seen his work and likely didn’t know it. Dan’s personality was larger than life.

He was full of wit, sarcasm, and humour. He was a friend. His one-liners would make people laugh or roll their eyes…no matter how many times he said them. I gave Dan a hard time about something every day. EVERYONE gave Dan a hard time. He revelled in it. It was always fun.

Dan mentored a LOT of broadcast technicians here in town in important things line: how to properly (mostly ;-)) build a camera, how to wrap a cable, where to find the free ice cream…and was a shining example of how to be a good human.

Today is a rough day at the ballpark today where Dan would have been running a high camera looking down toward 1st base. I didn’t get to hear his trademark line as he arrived on site, “It’s a beautiful day for baseball.” Even if it was raining, for Dan, it was always a beautiful day for baseball. We are broadcasting tonight’s Twins game in his honour.

Who Is Dan Dettman?

Dettman, 68, worked for KSTP-TV, Channel 5, for more than 25 years and covered many significant events, station photo chief Joe Caffrey said in an e-mail to staff. At the time of his death, he was working for the Fox Sports North Network in the Twin Cities.

Charlie Cushing, an audio technician for all the major sports broadcasts in the Twin Cities, worked on crews with Dettman since 2006. He said they were close friends as well as professional colleagues.
