Rick Worthington Death: Fantastic Horseman racer Rick Worthington is dead



Australian Racing trainer Rick Worthington is dead and his fellow trainer Chris Waller goes emotional i a new tribute to him as a ‘’fantastic horseman’’ after his death was announced at Randwick on Saturday.


Moments after Mister Sea Wolf had won the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick to give the champion trainer the first three horses across the line, a clearly upset Waller said Worthington’s death had shocked all trainers.

“All the trainers found out about half an hour ago and there was just an eerie silence,” he said, fighting back tears. “To lose a man like Rick, it’s very sad. Too young.

“Extremely sad to report the passing of great horseman Rick Worthington. Bought and broke in so many good types. Trained in Sydney since 2006. Had battled cancer over the past few years. RIP”

“He was the first one to help anyone out for someone who is doing it tough and he’s done it tougher than anyone over the last few years and he’d be the last one to show it.

Mister Sea Wolf ($5 eq fav) held off Yulong Prince ($21), with Cups horse Finche ($9) catching the eye for third.

Warwick Farm-based Worthington had been battling cancer for some years and had found some tonic for his battles with the performances of his former Australia Stakes winner Whitefriars.

Waller said Worthington got on with life despite his health troubles.

“He was a tough man and that’s how he will be remembered by all of us and so many people outside of racing as well,” Waller said.

“A fantastic horseman and just a dedicated man to horses all his life.”

Successful rider Nash Rawiller said: “Rick’s been a trainer that I would say everyone in the room has had success for. And if they haven’t ridden winners for him, they have had the pleasure of knowing him.

“We’ve all known he has had a tough battle the last few years, but he is a fella that always had a smile on his face and something good to say.”
