The American video game developer Epic Games sued Apple after the company removed the popular video game Fortnite from its App Store.
Apple and Google withdrew Fortnite from their app stores this Thursday (08/13/2020), after Epic Games, the publisher of the successful video game, tried to circumvent the systems to pay commissions to the two technological giants.
Developers must pay application download platforms (App Store and Google Play Store) a 30% commission on user transactions.
But Epic Games installed an alternative payment method, which allows players to save money by bypassing the default, mandatory embedded systems.
Approximately 350 million people have played Fortnite since 2017, the year of release of this survival shooter that has become a star in e-sports competitions.
“Today, Epic Games made the unfortunate decision to break the App Store rules, which apply to all developers and are designed to keep the store safe for our users,” Apple told AFP. “As a result, Fortnite has been removed from the store.”
Abuse of a dominant position and “anti-competitive” practices
Video game enthusiasts using Apple devices will be able to continue playing, but will no longer receive updates, which go through the App Store.
In response, Epic Games decided to take Apple to court. The study accuses the Californian group of abuse of a dominant position and “anti-competitive” practices. “Apple is bigger, more powerful, more entrenched and more pernicious than the monopolies of yesteryear,” states the complaint filed Thursday in federal court.
“Apple has become what it once ranted against. The monster that wants to control markets, block competition and stifle innovation,” the document states.
For its part, Apple defends itself by claiming that its internal policy for the App Store creates an environment of equality for all developers and at the same time “protects” customers against possible fraud or illegal content.
The situation is different in Google’s operating system, Android, which allows developers to offer their applications through different platforms.
But “for game publishers who choose to go through the Play Store, we have consistent regulations that are fair to developers and guarantee store security for users,” Google told AFP.
“Fortnite is still available on Android, but we can no longer offer it on Play because it violates our rules,” the group continues, while expressing its willingness to discuss with the publisher so that the game can return.
