Lieutenant-General Vejaynand Indurjith Ramlakan passed away today in his home.
He was the commander of the South African Army. The doctor, who served in Umkhonto siSizwe (MK), the African National Congress’ military unit, during the liberation struggle with the South African government in the 1980s, referred to the South African Defense Force where MK was recruited. in 1994.
The sad news of his death has been reported in social media. He died at the age of 64 from a suspected heart attack on the 27th of August 2020 in a Johannesburg hospital.
He first joined Mkhonto we Sizwe (MK) as an underground worker in Natal in 1977. During this time, he trained for general military service in South Africa and Swaziland. At the University of Natal, General Ramlakan served as President of the Council of Student Representatives of Medicine from 1979 to 1980.
From 1981 to 1983, he was the President and General Secretary of the Natal Health Worker’s Association, and also a member of the United Democratic Front (UDF). As part of the MK mandate in the province of Natal at the time, Lt Gen Ramlakan was involved in MK Operation BUTTERFLY. He also held the position as a member of the first APMC within South Africa.
His continued military and political involvement saw him imprisoned on Robben Island between 1987 and 1991, when he was a member of the Central Committee for Political Education. General Ramlakan served as Medical Commander at the ANC’s national conference in 1991 and CODESA between 1991 and 1992 before becoming Commander Medical for the President Mandela Guard in 1991. Between 1993 and 1994, he served as Deputy Head of the Department of Health at MK and led MK. A military health team to be affiliated with the NPKF and subsequently the South African National Defense Force (SANDF).
