The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has officially started accepting applications for 2021. If you’re an interested candidate looking to apply for NSFAS funding but it seems incredibly daunting, don’t worry, below we’ve got you covered.
Government has also set up the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) to provide students with financial assistance to cover the cost for registration and tuition, and provide allowances for books, food, transport and accommodation.
Supporting documents for the application
Make sure that you have certified and valid copies of the following documents before attempting to apply for funding:
Your South African identity document / card (or an unabridged birth certificate if you are younger than 16 years old).
The ID of your parents and / or guardian (or death certificate where applicable).
Pay advice / letter of employment / pension advice stating income (SASSA slips are not required and SASSA should not be included as household income).
A completed and signed consent form, which you may download here and must be filled in with your parent / guardian’s signatures. Applications without a consent form signed by all the people whose incomes have been declared in the application will not be accepted and will be considered incomplete.
If you have a disability, please download the Disability Annexure A from www.nsfas.org.za, fill it in and submit it with your application.
Please note: The stamp on all certified documents should not be older than three months.
How To Apply Fot The NSFAS 2021 Bursary
Apply online By following these steps:
Step 1: Go to www.nsfas.org.za and click myNSFAS
Step2: Create a myNSFAS account
Step3: Click the apply tab and answer the questions on the screen
Step 4: Upload the required supporting documents then click submit
After you click submit your application reference number will appear on the your screen.
The reference number will also be sent to the cellphone number and email address you provided.
You can apply online using a cellphone, tablet or computer
Where To Apply:
Kindly go to an application centers provided or you may also apply at www.nsfas.org.za to find an application center near you.
The closing date for 2021 applications is November 30 2020.
Who Should Not Apply For This:
1 Students who have completed a previous qualification, unless they apply for an approved funded post-graduate qualification.
2 Student who have already applied and received funding in previous years. They are automatically funded for the duration of their studies,provide they pass their modules and meet the academic requirements.
Please note that your application will NOT be considered if:
You have already applied for 2019 and 2020 on www.nsfas.org.za and have an application reference number.
You already have NSFAS funding for 2019 or 2020.
You already have an undergraduate degree / diploma or postgraduate degree, with the following exceptions:
BTech – Architecture / Architectural Technology
BTech – Engineering (all disciplines), Cartography, Forestry
BTech – Biokinetics, Biomedical Technology, Biotechnology
BTech – Chiropractic, Homoeopathy, all Nursing
BTech – Clinical or Dental Technology, Emergency Medical Care
Postgraduate Certificate in Education
Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting

How do you qualify for NSFAS funding?
You must be a South African citizen with a combined household income of less than R 350 000 per year or a SASSA grant recipient.
You are registering for the first time for an undergraduate qualification.

Prepare the following supporting documents for your application which should not be older than 3 months:
