Breaking News: Corruption accused ANC heavyweight Zandile Gumede sworn in as a member of the KZN legislature

Former eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede who has been accused of corruption was on Wednseday 19 August 2020 sworn in as a member of the KwaZulu-Natal legislature after Ricardo Mthembu passed away.

The move has raised a few eyebrows as the former mayor and 16 others face a string of corruption charges linked to tender fraud valued at close to R400 million.

Gumede has always maintained her innocence, saying as a politician she had no authority to sign off any tenders in the eThekwini metropolitan municipality.

Her swearing in comes just over a month after the passing of then-provincial African National Congress spokesperson Mthembu.

Mayor Zandile Gumede is accused of using her position of power to influence tenders worth hundreds of millions of rand at
Durban Solid Waste (DSW). She is accused along with 17 others.

According to News24, She is out on R50 000 bail after she, councillor Mondli Mthembu and others were accused of colluding with
corporate entities and others to circumvent the outcome of the supply chain management protocols of the municipality.
