Extremely sad news about Andrew “Tommo” Thomas . His tragic death is felt right across Wales, but especially his homtown of Cardigan.
As a Cardigan boy myself, I knew him well.
In fact, most people in Cardigan knew him, since he was such a lively ,outgoing personality, always cheerful with a big smile and clear, loud voice. He was irrepressible and always cheerfully ebullient. Never quiet or depressed, although he had every right to be so.
He covered up years of serious ill-health without complaint.
He had undergone dialysis and a kidney transplant back in 2007. Recently, he had undergone radiotherapy for skin cancer to the crown of his head. He showed me the very extensive treated area less than a fortnight ago. He had undergone serious treatment. However he did not complain and was looking forward to presenting a new Welsh language radio show as a freelance presenter. Sadly that has not happened.
Tommo was a larger than life character ,who was very popular throughout Wales and beyond. He had presented programmes in both Welsh and English for Radio Ceredigion, Radio Carmarthenshire, Nation Radio and Radio Cymru.
    He dubbed himself….. ” Swn Mawr y Prynhawn !”……” The afternoon’s big noise !”
That summed up his irrepressible , loud, cheerful style…….with non-stop lively banter .
As part of the large , well-known Owen family on his maternal side, he was a Cardigan boy through and through . He loved Cardigan ,or Aberteifi as we know it in Welsh, and Aberteifi loved him. He did a lot of charity work over the years…….always with great energy. He was a very popular local DJ and had even worked in Santa Ponsa, Majorca as a DJ years ago. I remember him telling me he had bumped into an ex-Cardigan pub landlord there.
I’m sure that tens of thousands at Parc y Scarlets , Llanelli, also loved him. As the “Voice of Parc y Scarlets” he did a brilliant job. He had a huge red army of fans……both in Llanelli and Wales !
As a young man in Cardigan, he had worked as a butcher’s assistant and postman. He had also been an excellent goal-keeper for his local football team..
He was a real dynamo………a huge bundle of energy………all the more surprising considering his years of serious ill-health.
As I say, “Very sad and a great loss to Wales…….and humanity !!”
Our thoughts are with his wife Donna and son, Cian Wyn.
Rest in peace Tommo ! Cysga’n dawel ,Tommo bach ! Nos Da !!
