Dick Dyer, the man whose name is very familiar to car buyers in the Midlands, has passed away. Dick Dyer was reported to have died on Saturday. He was 91 years old.

He started Dick Dyer & Associates at the age of 40, and 51 years later, his dealership still stands as one of the few family owned and operated dealers in South Carolina.

His obituary said Dyer was born in West Virginia. He came to Columbia in 1969 where he established Dyer & Beck on North Main Street.

He eventually moved out to Two Notch Road and the family chain spun off into several dealerships.

Dick Dyer’s death was made known to the public by HMA Alumni Association in an official Facebook Post.

Hargrave mourns the passing of Richard “Dick” Dyer, Sr.. Mr. Dyer passed away this past Saturday, June 27. He graduated from Hargrave in 1947 and later became a trustee on Hargrave’s Board of Trustees. He was Chairman of the Board from 2005-2007, and remained a lifetime faithful supporter of Hargrave. Mr. Dyer had a knack for the automobile industry starting as a salesman then beginning a career as a car dealership owner in 1969. His dealership was Dick Dyer Toyota Volvo Mercedes located in Columbia, South Carolina.

The dealership celebrated its 50th anniversary in July 2019. It is still family-owned and operated by third-generation family members, which made Mr. Dyer extremely proud.

Mr. Dyer is survived by his wife Beth, three sons, Taylor, Andy and Blake, ten grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Dyer will be held on Wednesday, July 1, 2020, at 3:00 at Dunbar Funeral Home in Columbia, South Carolina.
