Brazil begins first test of covid-19 vaccine developed by the University of Oxford.
The results of these tests will be essential for the authorization of the use of the vaccine in the United Kingdom, scheduled for the end of this year. It will depend on the conclusion of the studies carried out in all the participating countries.
The candidate vaccine against the new coronavirus developed by the University of Oxford, in the United Kingdom, began to be tested in Brazil, the second country with the most cases and deaths from COVID-19 in the world .
In the state of São Paulo, the richest and most populous in Brazil and the epicenter of the pandemic in the country, tests with the possible vaccine against Sars-Cov-2 began last weekend after obtaining the approval of the National Agency for Sanitary Surveillance of Brazil.
The initiative is led by the Reference Center for Special Immunobiologicals (CRIE) of the Federal University of Sao Paulo (Unifesp), coordinated by Weckx and with the financial support of the Lemann Foundation, of the Brazilian billionaire Jorge Paulo Lemann.
In a statement, the Lemann Foundation celebrated the start of tests of the Oxford candidate vaccine in Brazil, although it warned that the results will not be immediate.
“The specialists have an important way to go before they can celebrate good results. What will come next, we still don’t know,” said the foundation.
The project aims to test the vaccine on a group of 2,000 people in Brazil, making it the first country to start human testing outside the UK to test for immunization against Sars-Cov-2.
The results of the tests, according to Unifesp, will be essential for the authorization of the vaccine in the United Kingdom, scheduled for the end of this year and which will depend on the conclusion of the studies carried out in all the participating countries .
The forecasts coincide with others issued on Tuesday by Anthony Fauci, an epidemiologist at the White House, who assured the United States Congress that the vaccine could be ready before the end of the year . If this is the case, it would be a record time for such development, which is expected to be able to control the pandemic, especially against the most vulnerable populations.
As indicated by the adviser to the Donald Trump government, he believes that the question is “when”, assuming that an effective formula against the disease will be reached. On the deadlines, he indicated that he is “cautiously optimistic” about the possibility that it will be ready before 2021.
Vaccines generally require years of research and efficacy and safety testing before reaching the clinic, however world scientists are not giving up on a finding in a race against time, and are currently competing over 136 trials worldwide. to produce a vaccine between the end of 2020 and the first quarter of 2021 .
According to the latest bulletin released by the Ministry of Health, confirmed cases of coronavirus in Brazil now number 1.1 million and deaths total 51,271, reinforcing the country as one of the global outbreaks of the pandemic.
Although the figures are alarming for the South American giant, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned this week that they may be higher since, according to the agency, the country has carried out few tests to find out how many people have been infected with the new coronavirus.
