Macassar Dancer, Kirvan Fortuin Is Dead!
A popular dancer, choreographer and LGBTQL based in Macassar reportedly stabbed to death by a 14 year old girl. Kirvan Fortuin was stabbed to death in Macassar in the early hours of Saturday morning during a fierce disagreement with the teen girl whose identity has not been revealed. The 14 year old girl has been arrested for murdering Kirvan and investigation is currently ongoing.
According to reports, Kirvan Fortuin, 28 years of age died on the way to hospital following the injuries he sustained from the stabbing. Child Justice Act,” SAPS Western Cape spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana has confirmed the dancer was stabbed and has passed on.
Last year Fortuin hosted Africa’s first Vogue Festival and C ape Town’s first international Vogue Ball to observe World Aids Day in an attempt to help people living with HIV/Aids to shake of the stigma surrounding the virus.
“I’ve lost too many friends within the last five years because of the HIV virus,” he said. “When there was the hype about this virus, infections went down. Now nobody is talking about it and our people are dying again,” he told Weekend Argus at the time.
Fortuin also founded South Africa’s first ballroom house, House of Le Cap.
Tributes started pouring in for Fortuin early on Saturday, with many people expressing disbelief at the activist’s death. One of the first to comment was TV presenter Phil Mphela, who posted a seried of tweets honouring Fortuin for his activism.

Few Things You Need To Know About Kirvan Fortuin
Kirvan Fortuin is a South African born choreographer and dancer currently residing between South Africa and the Netherlands. Kirvan studied and graduated from University of Cape Town, Dance Teachers Diploma & BMuz Hons in Choreography, and Codarts University for the Arts (BA: Performer)
Kirvan performed in works by Jan Martens, William Forsythe, Jiří Kylián, Krisztina de Chatel and Cora Bos Kroese touring to the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Belgium,Italy and Poland.
Kirvan is currently working as a freelance dancer and choreographer, and founder and artistic director of the Kirvan Fortuin Foundation, whilst still dancing for de Chatel Sur Place dance company directed by Dutch choreographer Krisztina de Chatel. His choreography have been performed at several festivals in South Africa and abroad.
His commissions include Cape Town City Ballet, Dance Umbrella Johannesburg, Vrystaat Kunstefees, Artscape Theatre Centre, Suidoosterfees, Afrovibes NL & SA and the Afrikaanse Kultuurfees.
Kirvan is the 2019 recipient of a Ministerial Award from the Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport of the Western Cape.
