India on Monday banned 59 mobile apps , mostly Chinese, including Bytedance ‘s TikTok, Alibaba’s UC Browser and Tencent’s WeChat , citing security concerns, the government said in a statement Monday.
The applications are involved in activities “detrimental to the sovereignty and integrity of India, the defense of India, state security and public order,” said the Ministry of Information Technology.
Most of these applications were recently reported by Indian intelligence agencies out of concern that they were collecting user data and possibly also sending it “outside” the country’s borders.
It is the first time that the Indian government has banned so many applications from China. Previously, he had resisted following that path, limiting himself to posting notices to make users wary of Chinese apps.
The ban comes after a border conflict between the two nuclear powers earlier this month in which 20 Indian soldiers were killed.
The ban on Chinese apps is just the latest in a series of measures with which the country led by Narendra Modi seeks to hit the neighboring nation’s economy.
India began a trade boycott of Chinese goods last week in a market of more than 1.3 billion people. Giants like Amazon and Flipkart of Walmart Inc. teamed up with a dozen other online retailers to force merchants to prominently display the “country of origin” of all products sold online in India, a move that It is considered as a way to identify the products of China.
Boycotting China’s products has become a trend on social media as well, and they are frantically circulating among messaging groups.

The measure, which covers a total of 59 applications with links to Beijing, is a serious blow to the Xi Jinping regime, in the framework of the trade boycott after the border conflict earlier this month in which 20 Indian soldiers died.
