A helicopter crash off the coast of Greece has left not less than six people dead. One of the deceased who died in crash was identified as Sub-Lt Abbigail Cowbrough of Nova Scotia.
Confirming the to the news men during a press release, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in his words stated that six people were aboard the Cyclone helicopter before it crashed in the lonian Sea on Wednesday. He explained that helicopter was coming back to the Halifax-based frigate HMCS Fredericton from a NATO Training mission.
Describing them as heroes, Justin Trudeau on behalf of all Canadians sent his condolences to the bereaved families and promised to offer his support to the family and friends and to the members of the Canadian Armed Forces, to the people of Halifax and to the people of Nova Scotia.
Whilst the body of Sub-Lt Abigain Cowbrough has been found, five other persons involved as still missing but search by Canadian and allied warships and aircraft to recover there bodies is still ongoing.
Among the other five confirmed missing people are Captain Brenden Ian MacDonald of Nova Scotia, Captain Kevin Hagen of British Columbia, Captain Maxime Miron-Morin of Quebec, Sub-Lieutenant Matthew Pyke of Nova Scotia, and Master Corporal Matthew Cousins from Guelph, Ontario.
Macdonald and Hagen are pilots while Miron-Morin is an Air Combat Systems Officer, Pyke is a Naval Weapons Officer and Cousins is a Airborne Electronic Sensor Operator.
The search has been complicated by a large debris field and because the helicopter crashed in water that is 3,000 metres deep, Vance said. It was unclear what efforts will be made to recover the wreckage.
“Until the search is done, we won’t really know the disposition of any wreckage,” he said. “I don’t know what other capabilities will be brought to bear over time. I have to leave that to the investigation.”
Abigail’s brother Shane Cowbrough who couldn’t hold his tears posted a message on Facebook revealing that her sister died when the Cyclone helicopter went down in the sea on Wednesday.
In his words he said, “I am broken and gutted. Today I lost my oldest daughter Abbigail Cowbrough in the crash involving the Cyclone from HMCS Fredericton,” her father said in the post.
“There are no words. You made me forever proud. I will love you always, and miss you in every moment. You are the bright light in my life taken far too soon.”
Last week, Cowbrough, a crew member of the Halifax-class frigate HMCS Fredericton, stood on deck and piped Amazing Grace to honour those who died in the mass shooting in Nova Scotia.
Abbigails mother via her Facebook profile page reacted to the death of her daughter. penning down her tribute she “My beautiful daughter has been in a military accident and passed away. She will no longer pipe her songs to all those that loves her. … The very beating no fluttering of my heart has stopped. Nothing can replace her,”.

We are heartbroken to share that Abbigail Cowbrough, who was aboard the HMCS Fredericton passed away during a helicopter flight training exercise. Our prayer are with her family, and all those who have lost a loved one int this tragic accident. We will surround her family as we walk with them through this and we will keep you posted on ways you can help. There will be much more to follow.
