Who is Ahmaud Arbery?

Ahmaud Aubrey is a 25 year old Black American young man who was shot dead by two white men while he was jogging near Brunswick, Georgia.Arbery was shot dead by a man and his son Gregory McMichael, son Travis McMichael. Arbery was said to be unarmed and jogging on a road, when he was chased and then confronted by two white men with a pickup truck: Gregory McMichael and his son Travis McMichael. On trying to defend himself from been shot Gregory McMichael’s son Trevis fired a two shots from behind which led to the death of Arbery, The shooting video which surfaced online showed how Travis fatally shot Arbery.

Two alleged burglaries occurred in the Satilla Shores neighborhood in 2020 before the shooting. Only one burglary was reported to Glynn County Police Department between January 1 to February 23, 2020. The theft, was of a pistol from a pickup truck outside Travis McMichael’s house on January 1. His father, Gregory McMichael, had not locked the truck in the morning, and an hour later, Travis discovered that a Smith & Wesson M&P 9 mm had been stolen. The other recent burglary in the neighborhood was from a property that was still under construction. $2,500 of fishing equipment was stolen, but the owner did not inform the police.

Gregory McMichael had told the police they have sighted Ahmaud Arbery two times in the neighborhood and that he stuck his hand down his pants on that occasion, leading McMichael to believe he was armed.

Narrating the story to the police Gregory McMicheal said he alerted his son Trevis after seeing Arbery jogging.

“Travis, the guy is running down the street, let’s go,” McMichael said, according to the report.

The two grabbed a shotgun and a pistol and followed Arbery in their truck, police said. Travis McMichael, the driver, followed Arbery and then attempted to cut him off, the report said.

Arbery turned around and began running in the opposite direction, the police report said.

They chased Arbery to a nearby intersection where they caught up to him, the report said.

“Stop, stop, we want to talk to you,” Gregory McMichael shouted at Arbery, according to the police report.

Travis McMichael then exited truck with the shotgun, the police report said. His father told officers Arbery “violently attacked” his son, the report said, and they struggled over the gun.

Travis McMichael fired two shots, the report said, and Arbery fell. Arbery was ruled dead by a coroner.

Neither Gregory McMichael nor his son, Travis, have been arrested in the shooting death.

Nearly three months after Ahmaud Arbery was killed, no arrests was made and no charges have been filed in the case.

Protests and  Investigation on Ahmaud Arbery’s Death

After the video of his shooting circulated on social media Tuesday March 2020, a large crowd of protesters marched through the neighborhood where Arbery was killed. The Georgia Bureau of Investigations announced Wednesday 6 2020 that it was opening its own probe into the Feb. 23 incident.

Tom Durden, the district attorney for Georgia’s Atlantic Judicial Circuit, recommended that a grand jury review the case to decide if charges should be filed. Due to the state’s COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, no grand juries in Georgia will be allowed to convene through June 12. Durden said, “I do intend to present the case to the next available grand jury in Glynn County

The Police on May 7 2020 arrested Gregory McMichael and his son, Travis McMichael who were involved in the killing of Ahmaud Arbery. The two white men were arrested and charged on Thursday in connection with the shooting that took the life of Ahmaud, who turned 25 on February. They were arrested two days after the graphic footage became public and more than two months after the killing itself. They were booked into the Glynn County Jail.

Gregory McMichael is a former officer with the Glynn County Police Department, and until his retirement last year, he spent many years as an investigator in the local district attorney’s office.
