Today South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a special 6-month coronavirus unemployment grant for those who are unemployed.

The grant is aimed towards relieving the plight of those who are most desperately affected by the coronavirus. The grant is first of it’s kind in South Africa.

The special Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress grant will be paid for the next six months to individuals who are currently unemployed and do not receive any other form of social grant or Unemployment Insurance Fund payment. The Department of the Social Development will conduct the payment.

Qualification For The Unemployment Grant

The president has not provided further information on what steps people would need to take or what type pf documentation they would have to provide to qualify for the relief grant which is set to run over a period of six months.

How To Apply

On how to apply for the unemployment grant President Ramaphosa said it will soon announce how to apply for the new payout.

According to him it will be a massive undertaking, given that the country remains under lockdown and prospective recipients won’t be able to apply in person yet. The first payouts are due to next month.
